Ah, when Land Rover actually cared about people besides soccer moms.

How reliable were Discos anyways?

Oh she’s so beautiful! You could drive these things through a hurricane or tornado and it would come out a swinging.

I’d be surprised if a new Land Rover could drive across a beach or small creek.

Pretty much everyone who’s driven them critically has said the new Range Rover trounces all the ones before it in terms of off-road ability.

Land Rover actually spent a lot of time consulting with owners who had owned multiple Range Rovers when they were designing the new one, and by all accounts they did an excellent job of improving the off-road ability right alongside the on-road.

I was exaggerating a little bit haha! My comment was more reference on how “soccer mom” the Land Rover/Range Rover vehicles have become.

All recent “Land Rovers” are hipster junk that aren’t fit to carry the side curtains for a Series III

“It’s not broken, it’s British”

Land Rovers are hit or miss. You may have no issues, or you’ll follow in Doug’s footsteps with his RR.

It will be fun though.

While their customer base has definitely swayed that way, at least so far LR has resisted the temptation to abandon the off-road side of things.

The biggest difference between the original and the current is how luxury they’ve become. That may or may not be a bad thing, but it’s certainly driven the price up.

Mums deserve to go offroading as much as the rest of us. As for reliability, I’ve been told they were so bad that the next gen Disco was called the LR3 in the states to avoid association. Here in Blighty, they were for people who couldn’t afford Range Rovers but then again if you didn’t need the luxury why spend the extra money, they have pretty much the same off road capability.

My only issue with the new Range Rover is the aluminum body. When off-roading you’re bound to end up with scratches and dents eventually and aluminum is quite costly to repair.

Other than that I think they did a great job on the luxury side of the RR.

LR has seemed to retain that off-road edge and that's a good thing, even the new Discovery Sport (I think?) is supposed to be fairly good in the mud and water.

All new Land Rovers are built for the rich.

There’s a ton of them on Craigslist for very tiny prices, with very not tiny problems and issues.

Always wondered what would have happened had they brought the diesels here to the US - might have upped the reliability factor.

Does anybody buy a Land Rover to take it offroad? No. Has any private owner taken a new Land Rover offroad? Probably not.

They simply don’t care anymore, or else they’d still be making Defenders.

1. So you speak for 100% of Land Rover owners globally, do you?

2. I’m guessing you’ve never been to the English countryside.

3. The Defender had to die. Nobody is buying the new ones and it is routinely panned by journalists for being out of date.

2. New.

3. It was out of date.

Seriously next time you take a holiday/vacation come to England, ignore the castles, museums and The Queen, go to the countryside and have your faith restored. The new LRs are much easier to off road, something which a lot of people have taken advantage off, thus why no one was buying Defenders.

New Land Rovers maybe. New Range Rovers, probably not.

They’ve gone luxury over utility.

The body is something like 300 lbs lighter than the body of a 3-series though. That’s impressive.

I used to own one of these minus the livery. It was perfectly reliable, until one month it went through a transmission, transfer case, radio, ignition, water pump, and suspension. 2/10 would not recommend.

Not reliable at all really. Head gaskets leak like crazy, front covers and oil pans leak a lot. Tie rods and bushings wear out. Transfer cases leak a lot. Front output bearings on transfer cases wear out and clunk. Water pumps fail. Radiators plug. Oil hoses fail spectacularly.

But hey, they’re cool and great off road!

That’s why taking one of them offroad would scare me also. Even if it would be awesome.

Oddly enough I’ve never seen one bite the dust off road unless it was driver error or just a direct result of being off road like broken axles or something along those lines.
